Maltese

The Maltese is a small dog with silky hair. When kept long and groomed like it would be for a show dog, the hair hangs flat over its body almost to the ground. Most owners however choose to keep it short and well cut because the long hair can be hard to deal with. They are a very lively and playful dog and they're good at learning tricks. They are very gentle, loving and trustworthy to their owners.  Feeding a Maltese table scraps can give them small dog syndrome. It is when a dog thinks they are superior to their owners and they start having human like behaviors. If they feel like they are the leaders they tend to be more snappy with children and adults. They are very small dogs and they're often less than a foot tall. A male is on average 8-10 inches and a female is 8-9 inches and they only weight 6.5-9 pounds. Malteses are expected to live 15-18 years.

German Shepherd

German shepherds are the most common dog breed in the county. They are very well proportioned and strong. Their head is proportioned with the rest of their body and their foreheads are rounded. Their eyes are dark and almond shaped. They are very hard working dogs and they are very courageous, obedient and easy to train. They are very good household pets because they get very attached to their families. They do not like strangers though because they are very protective and controlling. They are often used as police dogs just because they are so easy to train and so well behaved. They need family members that are not gone for long periods of time because they begin to feel abandoned. They need owners who are calm but firm in a consistent way. They will not respond to harsh discipline or they will become they will become timid and will tend to bite people. The average German shepherd weighs 22-26 pounds and weighs an average of 77-85 pounds. They are expected to live 13 years but as they age, their hips start to go out.

Great Danes

Great Danes are often mistaken for having a Denmark background because of the name, however they are actually from Germany. At one point in time they were actually a very common hunting dog. They are believed to have been bred between an Irish wolfhound and an old English mastiff. They were often used to take down wild boars and needed to be physically and mentally strong. Today they are bred to be gentle and are not used as hunting dogs. They no longer have as much aggressiveness so they are often used as show dogs instead of hunters. Scooby Doo was a Great Dane because they are said to be able to get rid of ghosts and evil spirits. Most people believe that Great Danes are the tallest dog, but actually the Irish Wolfhound tends to grow a hair taller than a great dane. Females typically grow to be 28-32 inches tall and males typically grow to be 30-34 inches tall. When Great Danes are born, they usually weigh one to two pounds, but by six months they typically weigh up to 100 pounds. They continue to grow until they are two to three years old.
